Google's New Clothes

Google has changed it's user interface overnight. The front page now sports a tab-less look and there is a new link to promote their shopping search Froogle.

The search results have also undergone a slight change. At least for the time being, the directory listings have disappeared from the results and all keywords from the search are now in bold. The dividers are a subtler shade of blue and the adverts are on a plain white background making them a little less prominent.

All in all it makes for a cleaner look. Read the press release for the official news on the changes.

Google Local Search

Google have moved their local search into beta from the Google labs experimental area. This is currently a US only service as you need to enter either a US town or zip code in order for it to work.

The results are determined predominantly through addresses and phone numbers found on the websites which are then cross-correlated with the yellow pages and other directory listings.

The local results can also make an appearance on the main Google search, where the top three results may be placed if the search is determined to have a local intent. A more detailed article can be read over at Search Engine Watch.
