Wash
Hoban Washburne is the joker of the pack and the pilot of Serenity. He was hired by Mal soon after he bought the ship, although Wash was much sought after by a number of Captains at this point. We can only guess at why he chose to accept Mal's offer, but the fact that he went on to marry Zoe may well have factored into the equation.
Wash is pretty laid back and although labelling him a coward might be a little unfair, he does tend toward the safe option whenever given a choice. He also has a partiality for hawaiian shirts and little plastic dinosaurs which litter the bridge area where he works.
As a pilot, Wash is at his most calm when he appears to be in the most danger. When the danger seems to recede, he almost immediately reverts back to his normal dry, wise-cracking self. He sometimes feels that his sense of humour goes unappreciated though.
Wash clearly loves Zoe, even if he does feel jealous towards her loyalty to Mal and the fact that she wears the trousers in their relationship. Wash can sometimes be the lone voice of calm amongst the crew as even Kaylee can get caught up in their latest caper. Despite this, his wife and his ship seems to be all he needs.
