River
River Tam is gifted. So much so, she makes her talented brother look like an idiot child. But she is also troubled. She went away to an Alliance sponsored school only to be experimented on to turn her into the perfect weapon. She suffered both physically and psychologically leaving her broken.
After managing to send her brother a message through code in her letters, Simon staged a rescue. This ended with her hiding away in a cryo container in the hold of Serenity, only for it to be opened early by a suspicious and somewhat disgruntled Mal.
Following the experimentation conducted on her at the Academy, River seems to display some form of foretelling or telepathy but it's uncontrolled. It's almost as if she uses her psychosis in order to tap into a higher consciousness.
River tends to slip in and out of lucidity which can have serious implications for her relationships. Simon obviously dotes on her, occasionally she can be found with Inara in her shuttle and at other times she might be found playing with Kaylee. Yet the strangest connection seems to be between her and Book who she appears to have a fond fascination for, even if she might not be quite so partial to his hair.
